Rehab or Skilled Nursing to Personal or Memory Care

After a fall or other accident, your loved one may require a temporary stay in a skilled nursing or rehab facility. After this stay, returning to life at home may not be an option.

When seniors aren’t on track to make a full recovery after a stint in skilled nursing or rehab, it’s time to transition to memory or personal care. To determine whether a senior is suited to live on their own, evaluate their ability to carry out Activities of Daily Living, or ADLs. There are six ADLs: eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring (walking) and continence.

Personal Care vs Memory Care

These facilities assist seniors in carrying out ADLs each day. Personal care facilities are comprised of apartment-style units where seniors live and receive services such as laundry, meals, and housekeeping.

Memory care facilities are similar to personal care facilities, but they have elements in place to protect patients who suffer from cognitive problems like Dementia. These residents require more stringent supervision to make sure they won’t inadvertently harm themselves.

Finding Personal Care or Memory Care

If your loved one requires additional care before they have set a care plan in place, the financial aspect of securing care can be difficult. Applying for continuing retirement communities (CCRCs) and long-term care insurance (LTCI) while still healthy is paramount.

Personal care and memory care facilities tend to cost between $3,000-$9,000 per month in the Philadelphia area.
